Cape Town's longest running street party celebrates the music, dancing and food of the vibrant Cape Malay culture of the city. Begun in the mid-19th century, it marks the Tweede Nuwe Jaar (Second New Year), the only holiday given to Cape Colony slaves. Festivities get an early start on New Year's Eve. During the carnival, more than 13,000 minstrels sing, dance and parade in the streets with more formal musical competitions scheduled in Green Point Stadium.
