The first chorus to use the word gay in its name was the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, born immediately following the assassination of gay councilman Harvey Milk during a candlelight vigil on the steps of City Hall in 1978. LGBT choruses became important spaces where people could combine musical talent with community to promote tolerance and inclusion, and today hundreds of choruses and tens of thousands of voices unite in song and perform all over the world.
