Harvey Milk, the self-proclaimed mayor of The Castro, founded the Castro Street Fair in 1974 to celebrate the diversity of the neighborhood. One of the largest street fairs in the city, it is a "fairground" full of food vendors, craftspeople, live performances, a curated art show, community-group stalls and DJs. Gate donations go to various charitable causes, including the giant rainbow flag at the Harvey Milk Plaza at the Castro Street metro station.
