Kalk Bay, which began as a fishing village, is now a suburb about 20 miles (30 km) from downtown with service by train and auto route. Its picturesque harbor on False Bay backs up on sandstone mountains, which lure speleologists to caves with names like "Free Drinks Saloon." The attraction for surfers is the Kalk Bay Reef with heavy barrels and shallow reef. More sedentary pursuits in the trendy village are antiquing and excellent restaurants.
