The beach at Muizenberg is where surfing began in South Africa. About 12 miles (nearly 20 km) of beach stretches from the Cape Peninsula eastward around False Bay, also known for its white sharks. But a sharks-watch lets surfers and bathers know when the sharks are headed in their direction. It has a special Surfer's Corner, an old-style beach pavilion, colorful Victorian bathing "boxes" and Blue Flag status. Muizenberg is a southern suburb about 25 minutes from downtown by the M5 expressway.
