Stellenbosch, 31 miles (53 km) east of Cape Town in the Cape Winelands, is an oak-shaded university town rich in Dutch colonial architecture and the center of South African viniculture since Huguenot refugees introduced grapes in 1690. The oldest South African town after Cape Town, it also has the second oldest rugby club in the country, which regularly produces players for the Springboks. Afrikaans is the main language, but English is understood.
