On the eastern side of Tiananmen Square, the China National Museum was created in 2003 when the Museum of the Revolution and the Museum of Chinese History merged, creating an exhibition space covering 16 acres (6.5 ha). It has a permanent collection of more than a million items including the Shang Dynasty "Simuwu Ding," the world's heaviest piece of ancient bronze ware, and Han Dynasty jade burial suits sewed with gold thread. It also stages special exhibits.
