Like a giant dragon, the Great Wall stretches some 13,000 miles (20,000 km) across China. The longest wall on earth and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is visited by over 10 million people a year. Some parts are only 1.5 - 2.5 hours from Beijing and can be easily visited by taxi, express bus or day tour. Popular sections include Mutianyu, the best restored and good for children and seniors; Jinshanling, a hiking route with beautiful architecture; Jiankou, picture-postcard views but challenging. Spring and fall are the best seasons, but avoid holidays when it is a popular destination for the Chinese, too. Other tips: carry an umbrella to protect against rain and sun, use the WC before you leave the ticket area, take along food and drink.
