Joy Hing, a tiny, family-owned restaurant known for its Cantonese roasted meats, has roots in the Qing Dynasty, which - if your Chinese history is rusty - was the last dynasty before the Chinese Republic was born in 1917. It started as a dai pai dong - open-air food stall - and has been in more or less continuous operation except for the years of the Japanese occupation. It regularly wins local awards and international recognition for its barbecued pork, roasted duck, marinated steamed chicken and crispy roasted pork prepared according to traditional methods.
