The Bund, Shanghai's famous waterfront along the Huangpu River, was a major center of economic activity in East Asia after the establishment the Shanghai International Settlement in the mid-19th century. The enclave ended with the Japanese invasion of 1941, leaving dozens of impressive buildings in an architectural mix that includes Baroque, Romanesque, Classicism and the Renaissance. The Lovers' Wall, a flood-control wall along the river, was once the most romantic spot in Shanghai. Daytime and nighttime cruises on the river are available.
