Amalienborg Slot has been home to the royal family since 1794, and continues to serve as the main residence for the current monarch, Queen Margrethe. The compound is made up of four palaces around a central cobblestone square and is a popular tourist stop for watching the changing of the guard, an impressive display of pomp that takes place every day at noon. There is a small museum in Levetzau Palace that has some nice royal portraits and several good statues scattered around the grounds. Admission to all of these is free.
