The Hirschsprung contains the most important works of the Danish Golden Age, an era from 1800 to 1850 that saw masters like Hammershoj, Kobke, Kroyer, and Eckersberg working at the height of their powers. The collection began as the personal property of tobacco manufacturer Heinrich Hirchsprung, but the museum has been adding artwork since its opening in 1911. The art is displayed in intimate settings in a beautiful neoclassical building in Ostre Anlaeg park, per Hirschsprung's directions, who believed the works should be displayed as they would have been in a private home. Admission is 75 DKK; free on Wednesdays.
