Freetown Christiania is one of the more unusual neighborhoods in Copenhagen, with a history that is unique to say the least. Founded as a commune by a group of homeless Copenhagers in the early 1970s, it has continually clashed with the government for non-payment of taxes, and for the sale of marijuana, which is the area's main trade. There are two rules in Christiania: don't run (or the residents will think there is a police raid) and don't take pictures of the drug stalls. The aptly-named Pusherstreet is lined with vendors selling pre-rolled joints, hash, and smoking paraphenalia, but guests should also remember that hash itself is still illegal in Denmark.

What most attracts the attention of the place to neighbors and foreigners, in addition to the impressive street art that unfolds through all its walls, is that marijuana is legal and clear. By having their rules and government they do not respond to them and they have positions perfectly visible through their streets and squares for sale...
