Though it has a very good selection of French Modernists, the Statens Museum for Kunst - or National Gallery of Denmark - is most valuable for its great Danish art. There are rooms dedicated to CW Eckersburg, JT Lundbye, LA Ring, Jens Juel, PC Skovgaard, and Vilhelm Hammershoi, among many, many others. The subject of these paintings is often the daily life of Danish people, some brutal, some domestic, but all imbued with that particular shade of light so unique to the country. The compound also has a small children's museum, a large bookstore, and a very good cafe. Admission is 100 DKK.
