Vauxhall, sometimes referred to as VoHo or Vauxhall Gay Village, rose to gay prominence when SoHo began to lose a bit of its gritty gayborhood shine. South of the river, most of the activity happens under the railway arches where big name clubs, bars and saunas like Fire, Union and Chariots keep the party going round the clock on weekends. Other big names like Barcode, The Hoist and Paris Gym have already come and gone, although the legendary Royal Vauxhall Tavern nearby has been welcoming gays to its cabaret shows since WWII and continues to hold its footing despite gentrification pressures. And not far from that is what as known as Brokeback Mountain, a small rugged hillock in what is left of the 17th century pleasure gardens.
