"Monument for the Murdered Jews of Europe." One block south of the Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust Memorial has become one of Berlin's most visited sites and most misused photo-opportunities. Inaugurated in 2005, it is one of the new additions to Berlin's war memorials and arose amidst all the expected controversy. Consisting of innumerable, foreboding concrete blocks or "stelae," its purpose is to disorient and leave the visitor without any safe-haven in traditional symbolism from Europe's sins.
