Schöneberg's identity as a gay village goes back to Berlin's sexual liberation scene in the early 20th century and Christopher Isherwood's 1930s tales that inspired "Cabaret." Current nightlife is more leather and darkroom than Kit Kat Club although the anything-goes Woof bar calls its Sunday strip party after Isherwood's fictional cabaret. The area around Nollendorfplatz is where the first gay pride events took place in 1919 and where many Berlin Pride activities take place each July. Gay bars, clubs, cafes, saunas and shops are concentrated along several blocks of Fuggerstrasse and Mostrasse. Since the fall of the Wall, gayborhoods have also sprung up in Kreuzberg, Prenzlauer Berg and Neukölln in what was East Berlin.
