The oldest park in Berlin, the Volkspark Friedrichshain is sprawling and full of more local Berliners than one will ever see at the Tiergarten. Highlights of the park are the elaborate Fairy Tale Fountain at the entrance, which amazingly survived Allied bombings, and two giant mounds created after the war by piling rubble, which are now overgrown in greenery and a great workout for runners and bikers. There are also an incredible amount of statues throughout, including an impressive monument to the Spanish Civil War on its outskirts by the DDR sculptor Fritz Cremer.
