The self-deconstructing facade of the Hotel Chelsea is easily spotted on the corner of a hip Belgian Quarter street. Conceived by German artist Martin Kippenberger in the1980s as an art-for-lodging exchange, the simple, contemporary rooms are hung with paintings by prominent European artists. The hotel's owner also hosts regular philosophy talks.
