A scion of the the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, the Ludwig emerged in 1976 as an independent institution thanks to an endowment of artworks from chocolate magnate Peter Ludwig. The very well-curated collection features artwork produced after 1900, ranging from early Expressionism to American Pop Art. It also lays claim to housing the most comprehensive collection of early Russian Avant-Garde outside of Russia.
