HafenCity is a massive inner-city development project - currently the largest in Europe - which aims to define a new downtown in both urban planning and architecture. Begun in 2008, it is a neighborhood of of apartments, hotels, offices, official buildings, educational institutions and commercial activity on two islands in the Elbe River where old port warehouses once stood. The jewel in the crown is the new philharmonic hall, which is scheduled to open in January 2017.
