The museums that make up the "Pinakothek" compound in Munich are not to be missed by any traveler, even the most lukewarm among art enthusiasts. They are world-class institutions with impressive, important collections: the "old" Pinakothek with its unparalleled collection of Old Masters (essentially Germany's Louvre), the "new" Pinakothek's 19th-century art, and the contemporary holdings of the Pinakothek der Moderne. The original Pinakothek also has the added significance of being one of the world's oldest museums, built first in 1826, and one can marvel at the architectural details that were at the time revolutionary: its skylights, neo-Renaissance exterior, and thematic ground-plan would go on to be the standard for museums all throughout Europe.
