Built as a nauseatingly neo-classical palace for the finest of German art during the second World War (as opposed to the art deemed degenerate by the Nazis), the building has since dropped the German from its title and is a non-collecting museum, hosting traveling exhibitions and its own shows of mostly contemporary art.
