This wide-open, neo-classical square designed by Karl von Fischer is truly the center of Munich's cultural life. With the Glyptothek and Propylaea framing its stately grounds, and the Kunstareal (Munich's museum district) surrounding, it is both an important orientation point in the city and a popular meeting place among Münchners, especially during the warm months at sun set. It was also used by Hitler for rallies during the war, and still contain many traces of these dark times, despite post-war restoration.
