Also known as the University of Munich, Ludwigs-Maximilians-Universität is one of Germany's oldest and most prestigious, fist established in Ingolstadt in 1472 by Duke Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut. Its hallowed halls have welcomed leading scientists, nobel laureates, prominent academics and notable alumni including Pope Benedict XVI, Max Planck (founder of quantum theory), Sir Muhammad Iqbal (philosopher and poet), Konrad Adenauer (Germany's first post-war Chancellor) and Sophie Scholl (co-founder the anti-Nazy Weiße Rose student movement who was beheaded by Hitler's goons.)
