The closest lake to Munich, the Starnbergersee is also one of its most beautiful. Created by ice age glaciers from the Alps, it is 127 meters deep and offers stunning views of the mountains surrounding. It's also a historically significant lake, flanked by Ludwig II's more impressive castles and mentioned in T.S. Eliot's "The Waste Land." And for those who like a little intrigue along with their sunbathing: it is in these very waters that under mysterious circumstances the king's dead body was found after a post-dinner stroll along the shore.
