The bird-watching throughout Lesvos is spectacular, considering it's a stopover for around 279 species, and the salt pans at Skala Kallonis are one of the best vantage points. May is the best month to visit, but really anytime during the warmer months, you may spot everything from owls to flamingos. Walking around the pans with a camera or binoculars and then stopping in Skala Kallonis for a beer is one of the nicest ways to spend an afternoon on the island.
