Housed behind a curved red brick and white marble facade of the Stopera building in a bend of the Amstel River, Amsterdam's City Hall is the site of the world's first officially recognized same-sex marriage. On April 1, 2001, then mayor Job Cohen joined three gay couples and one lesbian couple in a civil ceremony at the stroke of midnight, followed by a pink cake and pink champagne reception and gay clubbing. The Stopera is also home to the Dutch National Ballet and Opera.
