One of the three main canals of Amsterdam, Prinsengracht is the third and most outlying. Created in a project started in 1612, it took 50 years to build, quadrupling the city's size as the population grew from 50,000 to 200,000 in the 17th century. Prinsengracht has been, together with the other two main canals, on the World Heritage list since 2009. Canal bikes and canal buses are rented out from various points along it and a great way to explore.
