Overlooking Nevsky Prospect and constructed between 1801 and 1811, the Kazan Cathedral is an impressive Orthodox church modeled after the Basilica of St. Peter's in Rome but built purely by Russian masters with native materials. It is crowned by a coffered dome, and a stone colonnade of 96 columns forms a semi circle around a peaceful garden with central fountain. Inside is an impressive collection of art, detailed mosaic floors and beautiful ceiling frescoes. Daily services are held at 7:30 am 10:00 am and 6 pm. Women are advised to cover their hair indoors.
