The Hotel España, steps from the Liceu Theater and Las Ramblas, opened in 1859 as Fonda de España and was transformed into a Modernism jewel by Lluís Domènech i Montane in 1903. It was most recently refurbished in 2010 and now has a rooftop bar and sundeck. Even if you don't stay here, wander in to see the impressive alabaster fireplace or have a meal in the Fonda España where Chef Martin Berasategul, collector of Michelin stars, runs the kitchen. Accommodations are as sleek and stylish as the building is historic. Children and pets are welcome.
