The Magic Fountain, the free light-music-motion display at Plaça Espanya, was built for the 1929 World Exhibition and renovated for the 1992 Olympic Games. Designed by Charles Buigas, the choreographed waters perform for 20 minutes at 30-minute intervals on weekends most of the year and Thursday-Sunday during the summer. For the most spectacular shows, go Christmastime or New Year's Eve or the last day of Barcelona's Merce Festival in September when fireworks and lasers are added. Closed mid-January to mid-February for maintenance.
