Conceived by Spanish General Francisco Franco as a burial ground for soldiers of the Spanish Civil War, El Valle de los Caidos (Valley of the Fallen) is a Catholic basilica and memorial built into the mountainside in the Cuelgamuros Valley. The imposing basilica, designed in the traditional Spanish Neo-Herrerian style, overlooks the valley and above it is a 500-foot high cross, the tallest memorial cross in the world. Also on site: a Benedictine Abbey, a guesthouse and the Juanelos 16th century monoliths.
