Zurich's lake is formed by the Linth river, and is, after the Limmat, probably the second-most important aspect of the city's landscape. A wide, blue surface surrounded by and reflecting the maginificent Swiss alps, it is ringed by promenades and makes for nice swimming during late August early-evenings.

Nice lake, great for swimming in summer or taking a boat trip. On a nice, clear day you can see part of the Alps towering over the lake.
I like taking the boat from Zurich to Rapperswil, getting off in Rapperswil. Rapperswil is a small medieval town (with castle) worth to explore. Have a cup of coffee, relax and head back to Zurich when you are ready - either by boat or S-Bahn (train).
