Fortnum's started trading on 1707 from a small shop in St James's Market. From the beginning, it had a strong connection to the royals, as its founder worked for Queen Anne as a footman, and it has been the royal grocery for over 150 years. It was the first store in the UK to sell baked beans, after buying the entire stock of H.J Heinz's new product in 1886. Just around the corner from Buckingham Palace, it was where Kate, Camilla and the Queen herself made their first joint official visit in 2012.
