With an estimated 180,000 people, Rocinha is a shanty town near the Ipanema and Leblon beaches, taking a chunk out of the rainforest hillside in the otherwise rich Zona Sul. It exists as a city within a city, and although there is a lack of basic infrastructure like sewage and running water in many parts of the favela, a police-run pacification program has brought crime and drugs trafficking rates to an all-time low.
