Over 100 Royal Palm trees line the avenue leading to the entrance of the Jardim Botanico, founded by King John VI of Portugal in 1808. The Botanic Gardens, 60% is native Atlantic rainforest, is home to an impressive collection of rare Brazilian plants, including some carnivorous ones. Toucans, monkeys and marmosets are frequently seen around the public areas.
