The Museu da República is located within a luxurious palace, once the seat of the Federal Government until it was moved to the newly-built Brasilia in 1960. It served as the home to Brazilian presidents from 1956 to 1954, when President Getúlio Vargas committed suicide in his bedroom, preserved as it was on that day. Art is displayed in every corner, and the gardens are exceptionally well landscaped.
