Inaugurated in 1954 to celebrate the city's 400th anniversary, the 545-acre Ibirapuera Park is a great escape from the gray and polluted city center. Besides the beautiful gardens and lakes, the park fills out with Oscar Niemeyer-designed buildings, pavilions, sports fields, monuments and museums. There is also an interesting gay scene day and night.
