In the mid-70s, Bogota initiated the world's first ciclovía - turning over major city streets temporarily to cyclists, runners, skateboarders and pedestrians. Today the event from 7 am to 2 pm Sundays and holidays covers over 60 miles (121 km) throughout the city and attracts the multitudes. The city also has permanently designated bike paths (ciclorutas), covering 185 mostly-flat miles (over 300 km).
