Take a jacket when heading up Monserrate, the mountain lookout 10,341 feet (3,152 m) above sea level. A pilgrimage site since the 17th century, it can be reached most easily by a short cable car ride or funicular. In addition to panoramic views, it has souvenir stands, restaurants and the gleaming Basilica del Señor de Monserrate with 14 Stations of the Cross from Candelaria to the sanctuary. Leaving from the Avenida Circunvalar, the cable car operates from noon to midnight (Sundays 9 am to 5 pm) and the funicular 7:45 am to 11:45 am (Sundays 6 am to 5 pm).

When I was there - on a sunny weekend - we had to queue for quite some time at the funicular. But it was worth the wait, the views are truly stunning. Everything else up there (food, souvenirs,...) is mediocre.
