"La Marquesa," a nature reserve 34 km (21 miles) west of the city, has historical significance as well as popular trails for hiking, minibikes and horses. At the village of La Marquesa, the Battle of Monte de las Cruces is commemorated by three large bronze figures of national heroes on horseback looking towards Mexico City. The battle, one of the most important in the Mexican War of Independence, took place in October 1810. Around the park you can find a good assortment of small fondas, offering local specialties like "blue tortillas."
