El Nevado de Toluca or Xinantécatl volcano is the fourth highest of Mexico's peaks, located about 80 km (50 miles) west of Mexico City near the city of Toluca. The long extinct volcano takes up nearly all of the national park and is the only one in Mexico to have crater lakes. The icy lakes - one green, one blue - are shallow and popular for fishing and expert scuba. The park also offers off-trail cross-country skiing in season, alpine climbing, hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding and often is used by athletes training for high altitude events.
