El Tuito at an altitude of about 2,000 feet makes a pleasant day trip if you tire of sunny beaches. A 16th century colonial town with orange-hued buildings, it is about an hour by bus from Puerto Vallarta. While there, try some raicilla, the distilled spirits folks were drinking before the Spaniards arrived. This "moonshine" - like tequila - is also made from the agave plant. The small town also has artisan cheese and coffee.
