The glitzy 50-room American Trade Hotel, which opened in 2013, overlooks Plaza Herrera in Casco Viejo. Hard to believe surveying the skyline today, but the restored four-story building, dating from 1917, was once the tallest in the country. Socializing goes around rooftop pool and in the lobby bar with croissants in the morning and jazz at night. The Los Angeles firm Commune that designed the decor went for a hybrid of old Cuba and old New Orleans.
