The indigenous people of Panama - nine tribes grouped into seven cultures - may not rival the ancient Incas and Aztecs, but they continue to produce distinctive crafts like the Guna molas and the Embera baskets. The Galeria Arte Indigena in Casco Viejo offers an extensive and well-displayed offering of indigenous crafts from around the country. It is a good place to browse high-quality baskets, masks and taguna nut (vegetable ivory) carvings. It also sells hammocks, jewelry, decorated gourds and genuine Panama hats. Just down the street from the French Embassy at the far end of Casco Viejo.
