Metropolitan Cathedral, built between 1688 and 1796, is one of the largest colonial churches in Central America. Its twin 118-foot towers glitter with mother of pearl from the nearby Pearl Islands and frame a stone façade. Inside is buried General Tomas Herrera, the 19th century revolutionary hero and head of state for whom Casco Viejo's Herrera Square is named. The plaza hosts an active crafts market with the Panama Interoceanic Canal Museum diagonally across the square.
