The names of AIDS victims with ties to Key West are inscribed on Zimbabwe granite and embedded in the walkway leading to White Street Pier. A commemorative ceremony with candle-lit procession is held on World AIDS Day each December 1. Key West had one of the highest AIDS rates per capital in the US in 1988, surpassing San Francisco and New York. The memorial was dedicated in 1997 with 730 names. Today it has more than 1,000 names and is the world's only municipal AIDS memorial.
