Climb the 88 steps to the top of the Key West Lighthouse and learn what it was like to maintain one of these beacons. Built in 1848 and in service until 1969, this tower replaced an lighthouse destroyed in the Great Havana Hurricane of 1846. In the early 19th century, a lighthouse keeper's widow maintained the property for some 40 years but was fired at age 82 during the Civil War when she spoke out against the Union, which held Key West.
