The Smell is a longtime all ages, alcohol/drug-free underground punk club run by volunteers, who are sometimes also the performers. No Age, Health and Mika Miko are only some of the bands that got their start there. Opened in the 1990s, the popular avant-garde hangout charges only $5 admission with no advanced ticket sales. It recently got a reprieve after new owners of the property wanted to tear it down to make a parking lot. Next door is the New Jalisco Bar, one of the oldest gay bars in downtown LA.
